Valle Gran Rey is located SW of the island of La Gomera. a town with extraordinary rural landscapes of great beauty, where erosion has shaped a peculiar living sample of the coexistence of man with nature. It is a territory intensely terraced between palm trees and buildings of traditional architecture, of great historical and cultural value.
Agriculture, livestock and traditional fishing constituted the basis of the municipality's economy until the end of the sixties, from that moment an industry linked to the tourism sector began to develop which, together with the primary sector, currently make up the economic engine from Valle Gran Rey.
The Valle Gran Rey Rural Park has an area of ​​1,992.8 hectares and ranges from sea level to 1,020 meters. It sits on the two main mountains that border the Valley, La Merca and Teguerguenche, but also includes the part of the ravine that follows La Casa de la Seda towards the Risco de Guadá.
From the wildlife point of view, the Rural Park is the last refuge of one of the most threatened vertebrates on the planet: the giant lizard of La Gomera. At the base of the Risco de la merca is also its Recovery Center, from where an ambitious plan is directed to prevent its extinction.
The coastal strip of Valle Gran Rey offers a series of black sand beaches suitable for swimming, being the beach of La Calera and the beach of La Puntilla the longest. Its coastal depths are uniquely spectacular for scuba diving.
El Charco del Conde, a place that has been named a site of scientific interest, forms a small bay ideal for children to start their first contact with the sea, next to it is the Charco de la Condesa, a shoal that has always been a place bathing and surfing. Both enclaves are related to the history of this Gomera town, and its name comes from the use that the Counts of La Gomera once used.
The port of Valle Gran Rey, located in the Vueltas neighborhood and built at the end of the seventies, is currently in a necessary phase of expansion in order to respond to the growing demand in terms of communications, fishing and sports, together with he is the Vueltas beach, another of the important beaches of the municipality.
Far from the town center of Valle Gran Rey, is Playa del Inglés, a black sand beach where you can practice nudism. Its remoteness makes it a perfect place for stargazing.
Valle Gran Rey offers hikers, both locals and visitors, the possibility of exploring its varied landscapes from the coast to the summit, in a simple and safe way.
The island of La Gomera has a wide network of marked trails according to the standards of the Canarian Mountain Federation (FCM) and the Spanish Federation of Mountain and Climbing Sports (FEDME), also complying with the international standards of the European Ramblers Association (IT WAS).
Two GR or Long Distance trails, the GR 131 and the GR 132 pass through the municipality of Valle Gran Rey, in addition to three main PR or Short Tour trails and five secondary PRs.
